Supporting Expressions of Youths’ Experiences
Art is a therapeutic form of expression that has proven to have positive effects on developmental growth across socio-economic boundaries. A strong connection exists between art and expression. This connection has been used in the form of art therapy as interventions for mental illnesses, and other physical diseases to help individual and communities with expression, relaxation, distraction, understanding or self/ones illnesses and empowerment.
The purpose of S.E.Y.E is to bridge the gap that exists in the adolescent population when it comes to providing an upstream approach to health literacy issues including, but not limited to, mental health, education, housing and food security.
The program allows for the merging of the therapeutic effects of art with the need of the community for greater understanding of the different social determinants of health.
Under the supervision of Dr. Margareth Zanchetta and in collaboration with Younge Street Mission, S.E.Y.E pilot project aimed to deliver a mental health literacy workshop for youth using modern batik. Participants were able to integrate their learning from the workshop into their art pieces. The goal was for the youth to better understand mental health and coping strategies as well as self-care
