Raquel Vassell is a Toronto born, Afro-Caribbean textile artist whose work takes a contemporary approach to the traditional method of batik. With an upbringing spent between Jamaica and Canada, she explores the sentiments of home and its intricacies through the concepts of identity and creolization. With influence from West-African folklore, practices woven throughout Jamaican traditions and delicate familiarities found throughout the diaspora, Vassell renders her own version of cultural archiving and storytelling. Through vibrant colour pallets, bold lines and patterns, her work brings those lived experiences of the diaspora, family oral traditions and the meaning of home to life through dyes and wax. A playful mix of soulful rhythms and inflection only experienced by way of sound can now be experienced through a frame, capturing the sense of cadence in storytelling to the visual realm of textiles.
